ISEE North American Chapter Conference Standard Registration Rates End Soon
Recognizing critical areas of research and growth for ISEE NAC, the conference’s theme is “Environmental Justice and Climate Connections.” The topic highlights two of the most pressing issues for our chapter.
The first-ever International Society for Environmental Epidemiology North American Chapter (ISEE NAC 2023) Regional Conference will take place on June 19-21, 2023 as a fully in-person event, hosted at Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon.
We invite you to be a part of this meeting in person, which will emphasize early-career researchers (students and those < 5 years from their terminal degree). Early-career scientists will deliver most of the oral presentations and make up nearly all keynote speakers. Our scientific committee (more than half of whom are also early-career researchers) continues to innovate, and the meeting will feature additional unique presentation types and different opportunities to engage with one another.
Standard registration rates end May 15, 2023. Click here for conference details and registration. |

Communications Committee New Funding Opportunity: Supporting Publication Costs!
Recognizing the need to support up and coming work from our members and the increasing cost of article publication fees, the ISEE Communications Committee is excited to announce the launch of a new pilot program that will support some of our ISEE members by providing funding for publication costs. In 2023, the committee anticipates selecting 3 awardees with financial support of up to $5,000 to cover costs related to publication of an article.
Any active student, postdoctoral researcher from any country, or early-stage investigator from a low to middle income country (LMIC) are encouraged to apply. To be eligible, the paper must not already be submitted to a journal. Additionally, the applicant must be a current and active member of ISEE as well as the first or senior author of the paper being submitted. Papers that are currently under review at journals cannot be submitted for consideration.
Applicants will be asked to submit their CV, a manuscript draft, the name of the journal the paper will be submitted to, and a statement about their work and how it relates to the ISEE mission as part of their application (approximately 1-2 paragraphs). Submissions can be made via this link.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until October 31, 2023 and will be reviewed within 2 months of submission. Please note: all available awards may be distributed before October 31. |

Policy Committee EU Ambient Air Quality Directive
In the next few months, ISEE members from many EU Member States will contact national policymakers involved in forming the national position on the EU Ambient Air Quality Directive proposal. We are preparing materials to help members communicate the health effects of ambient air pollution, current WHO recommendations, the benefits of ambitious limit values, and provide arguments and counter-arguments for these interactions with policymakers. We need your help identifying good studies evaluating the economic effects of clean air interventions (local, national, or sectoral). The provided studies and materials can be local or national examples in or outside of Europe about the impacts of policies and interventions on local businesses and local or national economies.
Please send the material to isee.policy.committee@gmail.com. |

Webinar-Methods in Environmental Justice: Results of a 2018-2021 Scoping Review May 11, 2023 12PM ET/9AM PT Presenters: Dr. Tamarra James-Todd, Harvard University and Dr. Joan A. Casey, University of Washington School of Public Health
Dr. Tamarra James-Todd is the Mark and Catherine Winkler Associate Professor of Environmental Reproductive Epidemiology. Her research focuses on consumer product chemicals and women's helath across the reproductive life course, with a particular expertise in environmental health disparities and cardiometabolic health in pregnancy, postpartum, and midlife. She directs the Environmental Reproductive Justice (ERJ) Lab and is the Deputy Director of the Harvard Chan NIEHS P30 Center.
Dr. Joan A. Casey received her doctoral degree from the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2014. Dr. Casey is an environmental epidemiologist who focuses on environmental health, environmental justice, and sustainability. Her research uses large secondary health datasets, such as electronic health records, to study the relationship between emerging environmental exposures and population health across the life course.

Europe Chapter ISEE-ERS Commentary on the proposed EU Ambient Air Quality Directive (AAQD) The European Commission published a proposal to revise the AAQD in October 2022. The European Parliament and the Council are currently considering the proposal.
The proposal includes important steps to achieve cleaner air but falls short of what is ultimately needed to maximize public health benefits, for the reasons explained in the ISEE-ERS Commentary.
We call for more ambition and a clear path in the AAQD toward complete alignment with 2020 WHO AQG for PM2.5, NO2 and ozone by 2030. Specifically, we call for limit values of 5 and 10 µg/m3 for annual PM2.5 and NO2, respectively, with the addition of a limit value of 60 µg/m3 for long-term (warm season) ozone. More effort is needed to decrease inequalities in health burdens from air pollution since the current proposed average exposure reduction obligations will not adequately protect marginalized communities. We further caution to be wary of delays in complying with limit values and of the deduction of "natural" source contributions, which are only expected to increase due to climate change.
The robust and stronger associations with mortality and morbidity at very low levels of air pollution underscore the large untapped potential for additional health benefits in Europe and should provide impetus for the European Commission, European Parliament, and the Council to be bold in its ambitions. Moreover, we encourage governments, local authorities and other bodies to continue to exert effort to improve air quality, even if the current proposed EU limit values have been met.
