We submitted a proposal for the WHO health pavilion at the COP27, which will take place between 6 – 18 November 2022, in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. Our proposal explores how health action could become a pivotal ally for climate action if appropriately included in mitigation and adaptation strategies.
COP observer status application
The ISEE Policy Committee is applying to obtain observer status for the COP. If accepted, this would be valid from COP28 and would allow ISEE members to attend and participate in the COPs to come.
The Climate & Health Alliance membership
The ISEE Policy Committee has applied for membership in The Global Climate and Health Alliance. This international coalition of health and development-focused organizations from around the world works to tackle human-induced climate change and, through this, to protect and promote public health. We hope that being part of this community will lead to fruitful initiatives and a long-lasting partnership.
The Fossil Fuel Non-proliferation Treaty
This treaty is a global initiative to phase out fossil fuels and support a just transition, fast-tracking progress towards safer and more cost-effective alternatives. The campaign consists of a network of over 400 civil society organizations, including the WHO and the Global Climate & Health Alliance. More info here on the website. The climate group of the ISEE policy committee encourages you to engage with this initiative. You can sign the open letter from the health community here or endorse the treaty here.
Any ISEE members planning to attend the COP27 in person or who would like to be involved in any of the initiatives or receive updates, please contact Dr. Maya Negev here.
Air Pollution Group
The European Commission is using the linear relative risk estimates from the new 2021 WHO Air Quality Guideline systematic reviews to estimate the health impact of air pollution. These relative risk estimates are global and only include studies up until 2018, missing the latest evidence. During a stakeholder workshop organized by the European Commission in April 2022 and a follow-up letter to the Commission, members of the ISEE Europe Chapter, the ISEE Policy Committee, and the European Respiratory Society Environment and Health Committee higlighted the importance of using the latest and most relevant information in Health impact assessments (HIA). The follow-up letter presented specific recommendations, which were discussed in-person in Brussels with members of the European Commission and contractors conducting the HIA in June 2022.
