Postdoctoral Fellow - Climate and health in Latin America

Job Board Title:
Postdoctoral Fellow - Climate and health in Latin America

Post Date
3/5/2024

Expiration Date
5/4/2024

Details:
Applications are encouraged for a postdoctoral fellow in climate epidemiology with a doctoral degree in public health, environmental sciences, or related fields to work on research relating to climate change, urban health, and health disparities with a focus on Latin American cities.

The fellow will work primarily within the Urban Health in Latin America: Climate project (Salud Urbana en América Latina (SALURBAL-Climate), an international research collaboration of 14 institutional partners from eight countries in Latin America and the U.S. Using a rich set of health, social, and environmental data at multiple levels, SALURBAL-Climate seeks to examine how climate change and related urban policies impact health and health disparities in nearly 400 cities across Latin America.

Working closely with Dr. Josiah Kephart and the rest of the investigative team, the fellow will develop and implement a research plan to:

Develop novel estimates of climate-sensitive exposures in Latin America
Perform longitudinal analyses of the impacts of climate-sensitive exposures and projections of climate changes on health
Conduct multilevel studies of how neighborhood and city-level physical and social environments modify the health impacts of climate change and the health co-benefits of climate mitigation and adaptation policies. Particular areas of focus include: extreme temperatures, floods, wildfire smoke, and other climate-sensitive air pollutants.

In addition to working with Dr. Kephart, the post-doctoral fellow will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of investigators on the project at Drexel (e.g. Drs. Ana Diez Roux, Brisa Sanchez, Usama Bilal, Mariana Lazo) and across the extensive SALURBAL network. The fellow will dedicate most of their time analyzing data and writing manuscripts. Financial support will be available for travel to present results at scientific meetings.

The fellow will be based at the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health and will also work closely with researchers at the Drexel Urban Health Collaborative, with unique mentoring and networking opportunities. This fellowship is a one-year, full-time position, with a possible one-year extension, based on funding and performance. Work arrangements can be flexible (i.e., remote work, hybrid, in person) to accommodate individual needs. The fellow will be an employee of the Drexel University School of Public Health (http://publichealth.drexel.edu/). Postdoctoral fellows receive the same benefits as other Drexel University staff (http://www.drexel.edu/hr/benefits/Overview/).
